It's potty time...
I think, maybe! Lately, David has been in the habit of telling me when he has soiled his diaper. “Mommy, poopy!” he’ll say and then point to his behind. I’ll walk over and do the sniff test to confirm and David will happily consent to having his diaper changed.
Yesterday morning, I was in the bathroom doing the 5 minute mommy make-up thing before we were to start our day. David was standing on the toilet playing with his toothbrush, still in his pj’s, which on this occasion was the very long white “starter” shirt he had been baptized in a few weeks ago (I didn’t know what else to do with the shirts?!). Again he says, “Mommy, poopy!”
“Ok, honey. Mommy will change your diaper in a few minutes when I’m finished in here.” I glanced over at him and it kind of appeared that he was in mid-poop, as opposed to after the fact. “Are you still pooping?”
“Yeah,” he replied.
“Yeah,” is a pretty standard reply for David. You can ask him the sky is psychedelic purple with acid pink polka dots and he’ll say, “yeah.” Accordingly, I wasn’t 100% sure what was actually happening. I finished up my make-up, and picked up my little guy to get him dressed. We went into his room where I laid him on the changing table and pulled up his shirt to find…no diaper…but poopy evidence all over his white starter shirt.
“David! You took off your diaper!”
“Yeah!” he grinned.
In my defense, the shirt is long and hangs to his knees…I couldn’t tell what was or wasn’t under there! I cleaned him up and put a new diaper on him and got him dressed. I then went into the bathroom…and found a little “poop ball” on top of the toilet. Ahh…so close!
(Sorry if this grosses anyone out. I’m pretty immune to such things at this point…it’s a badge of motherhood)
At any rate…all of this…the informing me if he has poop in his diaper and the fact that he took off his own diaper has me wondering if it’s time to start the dread potty training with Davey-boy. He seems young to me for a boy…just 21 months. However, David has requested to sit on the potty several times in the recent past, although nothing productive has happened as yet. Telling me he’s pooped and taking his own diaper off seem to show a growing awareness on David’s part of his own body, what it can do and how he can deal with feeling uncomfortable. So, I’m considering pulling out the old potty and just sitting him on it several times a day. I’m not going full tilt potty training with training pants and all the trappings thereto appertaining, as I’m really not sure this is the proper time…I’m never sure of anything in mothering to be honest. It can be really annoying. But, the way I see it, gently introducing Dave to the potty can’t hurt, as long as I don’t push him when he’s not ready.
I joined up with babycenter.com yesterday to see if they had any potty training resources for boys. It’s all so common sense….Oh well. It’d be nice if there was some sort of magical prayer one could say to make it happen in an instant…no such luck. Of course, where would the fun be in that? I gave myself the screen name of MommaLu-Lu. I thought it as funny…
