A new kind of superhero

David, my youngest son, has always had a particular affinity for super heroes.  When he was between the ages of 2 and 3, I had to beg him to remove a Superman costume he wore every day so that I could wash it.  At times, David has actually been convinced that he could fly.  Once, he even constructed wings from two un-bent coat hangers and trash bags and asked if he could try to fly off the front porch.  One of the greatest compliments he ever paid me was to draw a picture of a woman in a cape with the caption, “My mom is a hero.”  I carry that little picture with me in my wallet every day.

Transitions

It really wasn’t that long ago that they were littler people and in some ways, that time has passed like as though it were yesterday and in other ways it seems like a lifetime ago. So many externals in my life have changed since those pictures were taken.

A tale of two kiddies...

This past Sunday, the family went to Baltimore’s Inner Harbor for a late afternoon stroll.  Sometime since the last time we took a stroll downtown, a fountain of sorts has been installed along the promenade.  This fountain is not a stately reflection pool with an oversized bird bath shooting up spray in the middle.  It’s a series of holes in the pavement from which water shoots up unexpectedly at different times and heights…a fountain made for playing!

It was warm Sunday afternoon, but not terribly hot so I warned the kids that if they ran through the water, they might catch a bit of a chill, but it was up to them to take that risk.  Ana immediately ran over and waited for the perfect time to run through and had a perfectly rip roaring good time.  David stood by my side, holding my hand and watching.
