Bright Spots
Dec 5, 2007 The kids are over the moon excited. First, we had a snow fall today. It wasn’t’ supposed to amount to much or lay on the roads…but guess what? There’s 2 or three inches of the stuff laying on the road in front of my house. I’m wondering what this rather early snowfall portends for the rest of the winter. It was a beautiful early in the day and absolutely the kind of snowstorm I like. The roads were mostly wet, easily passable. The trees, grass and unbagged piles of leaves became beautiful frosted sculptures. We turned on “Journey Through the Snow” from The Nutcracker on our way to pick up our friend H. Lovely afternoon.
And, tomorrow is St. Nicholas Day. Since we celebrate our fasting and feasting sundown to sundown, we had our festal meal this evening, salmon, lenten pierogis (I made them, they need some work but they were OK) and veggies. Yum. The kids have sung the “Oh who loves, Nicholas the saintly?” song at the top of their lungs multitudinous times and laid out three shoes each. Hopefully, St. Nicholas will fill all three and take a way the pictures they drew for him.
Right now, they’re watching Simon in the Land of the Chalk Drawings on youtube. Thank you Lord for youtube! All of the old Schoolhouse Rocks videos are there also…which is good, because sometimes you just need to rock out to “Interplanet Janet.”
Tomorrow, we go to see The Nutcracker at the BSO’s midweek concert series for kids. All of these are blessings to be counted.
Blessings to you!

The concert sounds fun!! I am going to have to look for Simon...sometimes I still sing the song to myself. We have the DVDs of Schoolhouse Rock...it's the easiest way to memorize the Preamble to the Constitution. I should make the children watch some soon. They'd much rather watch Star Wars. Today I tried to explain about St. Nicholas and Santa Claus...but my son really wants to believe in Santa...but seeing as how St. Nicholas is really real, W. decided to put his shoes out. I should have left well enough alone! They'll do anything for candy. :)
Happy, Happy St. Nicholas Day! Holy St. Nicholas, pray to God for us!
Happy St. Nicholas Day Mimi and Amy!
Amy...most kids will do anything for candy. St. Nicholas brought the kids candy and an orange...so he must know us moms want them to eat healthy sometimes!!
PS...my kids love schoolhouse rocks! They still sing the "Interjections!" song.
Laura, Will you please share the lenten pierogis receipe?
Since we are on the Old Calendar we still have some days to go until we get to celebrate St. Nicholas Day-- I had forgotten all about the St. Nicholas Song; I enjoy hearing the kids sing it.
Thank you for sharing the receipe-- It sounds like a nice warm tasty treat... especially for those chilly days that weave through the Nativity Fast.
