Rooskee Yahzik

Certain friends of mine, and my family, know that I have this crazy idea about learning the Russian Language (and, if you know any Russian, the title of this post now makes sense).  I’ve been attempting off and on over the last few years to learn.  Recently, I began again in earnest, first with Rosetta Stone through our local public library.  Unfortunately, Rosetta is slowly letting all of its public library contracts expire, and I no longer have access to this wonderful program.  It was very intuitive and I felt as through I was learning a lot.

So, back to the book I go.  Fortunately, there are a few folks who speak Russian at my parish who can help with pronunication and the finer points of the language, as needed.  However, the farther I delve into the book (I’m now on Chapter 5) the stoopider I feel. It’s so much fun to read, “here is the rule for noun endings preceded by a preposition, with this exception and that exception and this one over here and, etc., etc., ad infinitum.

At this point I highly doubt that I will ever have any proficiency with speaking the language unless I am parachuted against my will into Moscow, given a few rubles and told to make my way as best I can for a few years.  I also doubt that I will ever make my way through Brothers K, in Russian, as I had originally hoped.  But, if I stick with it…maybe I’ll manage a Pushkin poem or a Gogol short story.  If my brain doesn’t explode first!!  I’m hoping to get some CD’s language learning CD’s to listen to on my way to work…which may help.

Me and my crazy ideas.
